JOIN US IN CHARLOTTESVILLE THIS NOVEMBER

By now you should have received a flyer in the mail about the annual meeting for members which will be held, free of charge to all VRA members, in Charlottesville on November 6 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

"Since we moved the conference to May, we decided to hold a one-day meeting in the fall. This will be an opportunity to network and participate in some strategic planning sessions," said conference chair, Kate Sicola. "VRA board member, Ron Vance is experienced in leading strategic planning sessions so he will be helping us make decisions about the future direction of the VRA organization."

Also on the agenda are an inspirational keynote speaker, Edward E. Clark, who is the president of the Wildlife Center of Virginia, reports from the Board of Directors and a delicious lunch.

This meeting is free for current, new and renewing members ($20 for non-members). Register for the meeting on our website, or call Erica Trout at 888-867-1923.

Oh, and there will be prizes!

Encourage your friends and colleagues to join or renew with the VRA and come the November meeting. Make sure they note on their registration that YOU referred them. The person with the most referrals wins a FREE registration at the 2007 conference! A drawing will be held and one attendee will win $100 cash.

2007 CONFERENCE IN WILLIAMSBURG

To coincide with the 400th anniversary of Williamsburg, the VRA will hold their annual conference on May 1 & 2, 2007 at the Woodlands Hotel and Suites. As registration, sponsorship and exhibitor information becomes available we will update the website, vrarecycles.org.

AMERICA RECYCLES

There are about one month left until November 15th and the culmination of America Recycles 2006! The goal of this annual campaign is to encourage Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products. Consult the America Recycles Day Page for more details.

ASSIGN-A-HIGHWAY

Does your locality need affordable help with picking up roadside litter? The Assign-A-Highway Program uses individuals who have been placed on probation by the courts to pick up and maintain litter as part of their punishment. This program differs from the Adopt-A-Highway Program coordinated by Virginia Department of Transportation, in that the probationers are designated to clean up the highway 26 times a year.

The Assign-A-Highway Program may offer your locality a solution to sustain cleanups. To date, there are 11 counties in Virginia that have implemented the program. For more information about Assign-A-Highway, please contact Bobby Justus, State Coordinator for the Upper Tennessee River Roundtable, at 276.628.1600 or bjustus_assignahighway@yahoo.com and visit the website at www.assignahighway.com.

CONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION DEBRIS COMMITTEE

Last spring the VRA created a committee comprised of individuals working in the fields of construction and demolition (C&D) to explore ways to achieve much higher recycling rates for construction waste in the Commonwealth. More.

ECYCLING MONTH COLLECTS ATTENTION AND 140 TONS

The Virginia Recycling Association and Computer Recycling Initiative (CRI) are pleased to announce the results of April’s Electronics Recycling Month campaign. Virginia communities planned and hosted more than twenty events during April and May. These events enabled 2,100 participants to recycle 143 tons of electronics devices, including more than 450 individual televisions and 900 computer monitors. The actual results are higher because information was not received from all events and not all reporting groups provided the same information. More.

About the VRA

The Virginia Recycling Association (VRA) was formed in 1990 by a group of individuals committed to expanding state recycling opportunities. Since then, the VRA has become a leading resource of information for members, the general public, local governments, the  General Assembly, business and industry. The organization is guided by a diverse Board of Directors that reflects the membership
