Virginia Recycling Association Highlights
Annual Summary

From October 2002 through October 2003

  • Ongoing: Responded to more than 250 requests for recycling and
    waste reduction information through our on-line VRA listserve group or
    from phone inquiries.
  • October 2002: Held annual Conference in Williamsburg, Virginia with both recycling and litter prevention session tracks. More than 100 attended our 2-day conference.
  • October 2002: Presented 15 Awards of Excellence to organizations and individuals for their extraordinary efforts to promote waste reduction and recycling. Visit our website at www.vrarecycles.org to read about the awards and winners.
  • Fall 2002 & 2003: Promoted America Recycles Day through distribution of book marks, posters and resource information. In 2003, the VRA will offer prizes, to be drawn from pledge card submissions.
  • Ongoing: Exhibited our VRA booth for outreach and to promote our organization at a variety of events and conferences, for organizations such as Solid Waste Management Association of North America (SWANA), Maryland Recycler’s Coalition annual conference, the Virginia Energy Fair, the Virginia Environmental Assembly, and the Southwest Virginia Solid Waste Management Association (SWSWMA).
  • Provided at $1,000 grant to the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority to support the publication of a 16-page teacher’s newspaper supplement promoting the 3R’s and proper waste management.
  • Held two golf VRA tournaments: In October 2002 and June of 2003
  • October 2003: Offered three regional workshops that were free to encourage new memberships and provide outreach beyond our regular membership. Topics for these one-day workshops included electronics recycling, institutional food waste composting, rural recycling, special events recycling waste exchanges and strategies for working smarter, not harder.
