SWANA Workshops Offered to VRA Members
This May,
the VRA offered members the opportunity to participate in
three teleconferences related to communication, marketing
and education about recycling programs. The conferences, produced
by SWANA, were held at sites around the state to make them
available to more members. more
Final Phase of Automated Recycling Program is Rolled Out
Beginning
in July, the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA),
the City of Norfolk and the County of Franklin will implement
the final phase of the new automated curbside recycling service
that provides a larger, 95-gallon rolling container with a
lid. The new containers are collected by an automated truck,
which improves efficiency and permits co-mingling of more
materials for recycling. more
How Localities Can Promote Business Recycling
Contributed
by Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc.
Jurisdictions typically
find that commercial waste accounts for at least half of the
total waste stream, and with growing concerns about shrinking
landfill space and increasing disposal costs, the usefulness
of an automated tool to help businesses recycle becomes apparent.
Some counties
have extensive programs to promote business recycling. Some
struggle with conflicting priorities, limited resources or
both. Everybody agrees that there is tremendous potential
in business recycling, especially for mixed office paper (MOP),
and that the key is OUTREACH! more
